“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” 1 John 4:8 KJV
Begin with His Character
Some days we feel certain that God loves us. On other days, disappointment or exhaustion makes that truth harder to hold. The Bible gives us a foundation that reaches deeper than a changing mood. John writes that God is love. To understand love, we begin by learning who God is.
Read 1 John 4:7–10 as a whole. John calls believers to love one another and points to the Father sending His Son. God's character and His action belong together. His love is revealed in what He gives, and it calls for a response in the way we treat people.
Bring your Questions to His Word
Perhaps you have carried a picture of God shaped mostly by fear or by someone's harsh words. Take time to compare that picture with Scripture. Psalm 103:8 describes the Lord as merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. We need to let what God reveals correct what we have assumed.
This does not require pretending that every question is settled. The father in Mark 9:24 asked Jesus for help with his unbelief. An honest prayer can be the beginning of deeper trust. Open your Bible, name your question, and keep listening.
Let Knowing Become Trusting
In 1 John 4:16, knowing and believing God's love appear together. We can practice that trust during an ordinary task, a difficult conversation, or a quiet evening. Pause and ask: What has God revealed about Himself that I need to remember here?
We do not have to manufacture a strong feeling before turning toward Him. We can read His Word, pray truthfully, and choose one response shaped by His love. Over time, these small returns help us pay attention to the God we are learning to know.
Reflection Which belief about God needs to be examined in the light of Scripture?
Put love into practice Read 1 John 4:7–10 each day this week. Write one sentence about what the passage reveals about God.
Prayer Father, teach me to know You through Your Word. Correct the assumptions that keep me from trusting Your love. Help me receive Your truth and show kindness to the people around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
